Fox Newsgathering teams continually assess new hybrid and flex-fuel trucks for the fleet, in search of more fuel-efficient vehicles that meet the hauling needs of Newsgathering.
On June 30, 2008 Fox Networks Group will begin piloting an online payroll self-service website to allow employees to access and edit their payroll information anytime, anywhere. In addition to being safer and more convenient, self-service is also good for the environment: Once the program goes into full effect, FNG will save over 100,000 paper pay stubs and forms, in addition to 85,000 envelopes, per year.
Futurama, Twentieth Century Fox Television (TCFTV) and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment (TCFHE) are committed to reducing our impact on climate change. The Beast with a Billion Backs is the company's second carbon-neutral DVD release. (Futurama: Bender's Big Score was the company's first-ever carbon neutral DVD and was awarded most environmentally friendly DVD of the year by The Digital Entertainment Group at the inaugural Green Media Summit in Los Angeles.)
Our strategy to reach net zero emissions for the DVD was three-fold:
- To measure our carbon impact
- To reduce our energy use and switch to renewable sources of power wherever possible and to encourage suppliers to reduce their climate impact
- To offset our unavoidable emissions

To conduct this analysis, we worked with Clear Carbon Consulting and used the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, developed by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, to instruct our measurement methodology.
Sky Italia hosted former U.S. Vice President Al Gore in Rome to launch the Italian outpost of Current TV and to raise awareness of global environmental issues with the Italian public and media.
Twentieth Century Fox Television has partnered with Green Standards' "Waste into Wonder" campaign, a program that takes used office furniture and IT supplies from companies and distributes it to schools in need around the world. Green Standards cleared FOX offices in Toronto of redundant corporate assets. The items included therein will be put to good use in Ontario and possibly, around the Globe.
Twentieth Century Fox Television transformed its paper consumption habits by utilizing its Virtual Production Office (VPO), which is an online hub for Fox productions that facilitates the virtual sharing of scripts, schedules and calendars. The VPO not only saves paper, it also saves time and fuel use by eliminating hand-delivery of these documents.
The National Geographic Channel developed a portal for desktop screening of video content, thus reducing the need for DVD and VHS tapes.
The National Geographic Channel launched "Preserve Our Planet," an on-air and consumer marketing initiative that includes upcoming programming (Six Degrees that Will Change the World, The human Footprint and Impossible: Planet Earth), a robust Web site and PSAs dedicated to empowering viewers and communities by informing them how their choices and activities can make a positive difference in the effort to protect the environment.
National Geographic Channel, as part of the National Geographic Society, contracted with Pepco Energy to buy 39 million kilowatt-hours of wind power--100% of its energy need. The purchase took the form of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs), which are market tools used to encourage growth in the renewable energy market.
News America Incorporated has replaced almost all of its virgin copy paper with recycled-content paper.
The company conducted a full lighting audit of its headquarters in New York City and identified the potential for significant energy and cost reductions. The lighting retrofit is now underway.
FNC regularly produces on-air segments on a number of its shows tackling the importance of energy conservation. The network aggregates this content in an online magazine called "Go Green."
At Fox News Channel headquarters, CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors are replaced with LCD's (Liquid Crystal Display) when they expire. Employees are encouraged to "power down" their PC's when not in use, to use the multi-function Xerox machines to fax and scan electronically, and to print double-sided to reduce waste.
Fox Television Stations launched FOXe, a programming campaign that cut across all of its local news stations, to coordinate the efforts of the network in generating programming related to climate change and energy savings. Through an ongoing series of news pieces and in-depth specials, news stations across the country have kept their audiences informed about what they can do to conserve energy and help save the environment.

FSN Northwest (Fox Networks Group) had a VendingMiser installed by Puget Sound Energy on one of our vending machines. The device conserves energy by powering down the cold beverage machine when no one is using it. A typical cold beverage vending machine consumes $250 of electricity per year. The VendingMiser can reduce that by 40%.
FSN Detroit's (Fox Networks Group) building cafe, Sweet November, is now providing the following discounts to FSND employees: CoolChange or Big Fox mug will get you .50 cents off regular coffee. Fox Creative Services produced the first-ever carbon-neutral Emmy Awards show. Highlights include partnering with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to secure renewable energy for the Shrine Auditorium, installing a solar canopy above the red carpet grandstands, a red carpet and stage area blue carpet made from 95,000 recycled plastic bottles, and a press tent illuminated with only compact fluorescent and LED lighting technology. Plus the solar system has been donated to a local school and will continue generating renewable energy for the next 25 years.
On the lot of Fox Filmed Entertainment, Fox Food Service is taking on a host of initiatives to increase energy efficiency and reduce waste. Among many initiatives are: turning menus into pads for the office, reducing use of disposable cups, introducing biodegradable dishware and cleaning supplies, shifting to organic ingredients, and using china instead of disposable plates whenever possible.

With each new office opening, Fox Interactive Media is installing water filtration units, eliminating the need for bottled water deliveries. Also, they have issued each person a water bottle and coffee mug and have banned the use of paper cups and plates.
